Altenburg Fachanwälte für Arbeitsrecht acts at three German offices for clients, predominantly from medium-sized businesses, on issues of individual and collective labor law. The unit, which also handles international mandates through a network of law firms, focuses on advising clients on acquisitions, company pension plans, restructuring and compliance. Other frequently requested areas include works constitution and co-determination law as well as representation before labor courts. Stephan Altenburg, whose team gained further clout in this segment in September 2022 with the arrival of Marc Spielberger, is active in the reorganization and restructuring area; Spielberger came from Deloitte Legal Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, where he previously headed the Munich team.

The team, which now has a good 20 members, regularly qualifies itself in transactions or employment-law projects for subsequent ongoing advice. Most recently, the focus has been on models of variable compensation, collective bargaining issues and employee data protection. The latter is one of the focal points of Stark, who was recently appointed salary partner. With her, a lateral who joined last year and the addition of several associates, HH has meanwhile developed into the firm’s largest office in terms of personnel, from which the firm also advises on many restructurings, such as that of Airbus supplier Alten. At the interface with employment compliance, where founder Altenburg is a sought-after contact, the new whistleblower directive boosted business.”

“The boutique has mastered the entire range of advice to employers, but is recognized in particular for insolvency-related advice and employment restructuring. HH and Berlin are now in no way inferior to the Munich headquarters in terms of the degree of specialization and the reputation of the local lawyers. The HH office, which already has 2 highly respected partners, was strengthened with a well-connected lateral from Vangard, and an associate has also recently gained recognition in the market. In Berlin, Beck is pushing ahead with advice on occupational pension schemes, the reorganization of which is playing an increasingly central role in transactions and restructurings. The team, which operates across offices, was similarly in demand for the renegotiation of IT company agreements. From Munich, founder Altenburg continues to be a sought-after contact at the interface with employment-law compliance.”

“With its focus on reorganization and insolvency employment law, the recognized boutique is well positioned for times of economic crisis. However, before the M&A market took a break due to Corona, transaction-related advice also developed into an important field of advice. In particular, cooperation with law firms without their own labor law practice brought new clients, who now also rely on the experienced team for ongoing advice. For instance, the lawyers advised the French Lactalis Group on an acquisition in Germany and now on collective bargaining negotiations. The shopping cart inventor Wanzl, which relied on the boutique for the first time in collective bargaining issues in 2019, was advised by the firm. The team now also advises on co-determination and occupational pension issues. This mandate is also an example of the team’s increasing cross-location cooperation and specialization. The latter also manifested itself in a stronger focus on the pharma and healthcare sectors. In addition to developing its own focus areas, the firm also honed the career prospects for its associates in other respects: it introduced counsel status and appointed a Sal. partner. In this way, the firm also wants to get a grip on the high turnover among young lawyers. So far, the team has grown less organically than through lateral hires, including in Munich, where it most recently brought in a counsel from Latham as a salary partner.”
